  • Do I have to sign up for Medicare if I'm still working in Utah?

It depends on your employer's size. If your employer (or your spouse's employer) has 20 or more employees, you can usually delay Part B without penalty. If the employer has fewer than 20 employees, you must generally sign up for Part B when you turn 65 to avoid lifelong late penalties.

  • What are the local Medicare Advantage (Part C) options, and are they better than Original Medicare?

There are numerous Medicare Advantage (MA) plans from various private carriers (HMOs, PPOs). MA plans combine Part A and B, often include Part D (drugs) and extra benefits (dental, vision). The "better" choice is personal; it depends on whether you prefer lower monthly premiums/extra benefits (MA) and are comfortable with a provider network, or prefer nationwide coverage and freedom of choice (Original Medicare + Medigap).

  • How do I get free, unbiased help with Medicare in Salt Lake or Davis County?

You  can contact me, my service is free.

  • How much does Medicare Part B cost, and is there a way to get help paying the premium?

The Part B premium is a standard monthly amount (it changes yearly) and is usually deducted from your Social Security check. Yes, there is help. Low-income residents may qualify for a Medicare Savings Program (MSP), which can pay for all or part of the Part B premium.

  • When is the absolute deadline to sign up for Medicare when I turn 65?

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a seven-month window:

    • It begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month.
    • It includes your birth month.
    • It ends 3 months after your birth month. Missing this window, if you don't have other "creditable coverage," can result in late enrollment penalties.
  • Do I need Medigap (Medicare Supplement) in addition to Original Medicare?

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) only pays about 80% of costs; you are responsible for the remaining 20% (coinsurance) plus deductibles. Medigap policies are sold by private insurers to fill these "gaps." Most people pair Original Medicare with a Medigap policy and a separate Part D drug plan to minimize unpredictable out-of-pocket costs.

  • What is the Medicare 'Birthday Rule' in Utah, and how does it help me switch plans?

The Utah "Birthday Rule" is a special 60-day window (starting on your birthday) where you can switch from one Medigap plan to another Medigap plan of equal or lesser benefits that is offered by your current insurance carrier. This is a limited state benefit that allows some flexibility outside of your initial enrollment period.

  • How do I get prescription drug coverage (Part D)?

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) does not cover most retail prescriptions. You must enroll in either:

    1. A separate, stand-alone Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan (PDP).
    2. A Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) that includes prescription drug coverage (MAPD).
  • I can't afford my medications. What assistance is available locally?

You should apply for the federal Extra Help program (also called the Low-Income Subsidy or LIS) through the Social Security Administration. If you qualify, this program significantly lowers your Part D premium, deductibles, and co-pays for prescriptions.

  • Do I have to change doctors or hospitals if I enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan?

Maybe. While Original Medicare is accepted by nearly all doctors nationwide, Medicare Advantage plans use specific local networks (HMOs or PPOs). You must verify that your preferred doctors and hospitals in Salt Lake or Davis County are in-network with the plan you choose before enrolling
